Background and Education

Professor Webb has been based in Nanjing since 2008.  Previously, he was Lecturer on Social Studies at Harvard University, and a Visiting Scholar at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. At the Center, Professor Webb teaches Politics of Rural Development and a seminar on Ethics and Public Policy in Global Perspective.  He also runs the colloquium for MA thesis writers, and co-teaches the bilingual first-year MA Tutorial with Professor Feng Chuan.
 
Professor Webb received his AB in Social Studies from Harvard University, and his MA and PhD in Politics from Princeton University.

Research and Publications:

Professor Webb is the author of Beyond the Global Culture War (2006), A Path of Our Own: An Andean Village and Tomorrow''s Economy of Values (2009; Spanish translation 2011), and Deep Cosmopolis: Rethinking World Politics and Globalization (2015). He has done fieldwork in Peru, Egypt, Kenya, and Pakistan, on themes ranging from rural politics to social movements and youth perceptions of globalization. He has also written on the ethical issues behind current policy challenges relating to migration and citizenship.  His current research focuses on political theories of cosmopolitanism and traditionalist approaches to liberty, including a book project dealing with future global state formation.
