Research Interests

My research includes both empirical and theoretical advances to healthcare delivery science, with the aim of improving health and reducing harm for patients and providers alike.

I am particularly interested in patient safety and well-being, provider safety and well-being, healthcare quality, and the intersection of healthcare and population health. My work applies insights from design research, systems thinking, safety and improvement science, and public health to help diagnose and treat the systems barriers to improving outcomes in these areas. And, just as importantly, it aims to improve the frameworks, tools, and techniques that support research and practice in the field.

This is a rich and exciting research area that applies to problems ranging from patient safety risk management to preparedness planning, and from value-based care/pay for performance schemes to the design of the built environment. I am always interested in hearing from potential collaborators at: alcard [at] ucsd.edu.
