Biography

Following graduation (B.Sc. Hons and PhD) from Aberdeen University way back in 1980, I have held academic appointments at Imperial College (1984-1990), Cambridge University (1990-97), Fellow of Magdalene College (1990-97) and a Visiting Professorship at Newcastle University (1998-2000). In 1997 I joined Invensys Brook Crompton as Head of Research responsible for advanced motor technologies before returning to academe in 2000 with an appointment at UMIST.

After a short spell as the Head of the Power Conversion Research Group in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, I was appointed Director of the newly-formed Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre on "Electrical Systems for Extreme Environments".

My professional appointments include past chairman of the IEE Professional Group PG1 (Electrical Machines) (1997-2000), first chairman of the Executive Board of the IEE Professional Network - Power Conversion and Applications (2000-2003) and I have recently been appointed as Editor-in-Chief of the new IET Journal "Electrical Systems in Transportation" (2009 -).
