Biography

Hult International Business School

Professor Mukherjee’s research simultaneously addresses leadership, technology, and strategy. MIT Press, in collaboration with Sloan Management Review, is publishing his new book, Leading in the Digital World: How to Foster Creativity, Collaboration, and Inclusivity (April 2020) as a part of its curated series, “Management on the Cutting Edge.” The book addresses how the core demands of leadership are changing profoundly as digital technologies transform both the core attributes of work (e.g., more thought-driven than muscle-powered) and corporate organizational structures (e.g., distributed over time and space).

A prior book, The Spider’s Strategy, was named “One of the 30 best business books of 2009.” Professor Mukherjee has published heavily cited papers in the premier academic journal, Management Science, and many practitioner-oriented works in Sloan Management Review, Harvard Business Review, Forbes and many other media. He has advised CXOs of companies like SAP, co-designed and taught 80+ executive education programs for companies like FedEx, and delivered keynote addresses for top executives at companies like Rio Tinto and 3M.

Professor Mukherjee has two decades of full-time industry experience. He has led or advised several multi-organization teams that created major “can’t be done” digital and non-digital outputs. As the CTSO of a small NASDAQ-listed, digital native, hard technology company, he oversaw the launch of a key product while guiding the development of its next-generation version. As a practice leader in two consulting companies, and through his own boutique consultancy, he has advised CXOs at many companies (including Dunkin’, Bloomberg, and Colgate-Palmolive) on critical issues of strategy and leadership.

Professor Mukherjee has taught at three other top business schools. Most recently, he was Professor of Leadership and Strategy at IMD, the Swiss school that is globally renowned for executive education. He held visiting positions at Babson College, and began his academic career at INSEAD. His Doctorate is from Harvard Business School, MBA from Darden School/University of Virginia, and undergraduate engineering degree from BITS Pilani (India). He has lived in five countries and has worked in many more.
