Anne Lightsey

Associate Ombuds for UNM Staff at University of New Mexico at University of New Mexico

Biography

University of New Mexico

I began my training career in 1984 when I lived in Brazil, specializing in preparing exchange students for the changes they would encounter when they traveled abroad. It was then that I discovered that creating and delivering customized trainings is a passion.

In 1991, at the recommendation of a member of the International Olympic Committee, I became a Certified Mediator. Since then I have mediated hundreds of cases and was a founding member of the mediation firm Alternatives: Dispute Resolution Services. In addition to regularly mediating for the private sector, my clients include the New Mexico Children’s Court, New Mexico Adult Protective Services, New Mexico Medical Review Association, the City of Albuquerque Small Claims Court, City of Albuquerque Community and Employee Mediation Programs, Sandia National Labs, Zuni Pueblo, UNM's Board of Regants, and the Greater Albuquerque Association of Realtors, to name a few.

In 2015 I joined UNM's Staff Ombuds Services, a place where UNM staff can talk privately about preventing and/or resolving workplace conflicts in ways other than traditional adversarial approaches. Our goal is to help reduce the human and organizational costs of conflict. The primary service we provide is called a visit. The visit is a private conversation with a skilled neutral (an Ombuds) in which the visitor can think out loud about a workplace situation, gain clarity and perspective, and receive information about resources and possible constructive approaches. Afterwards, the next steps are entirely up to the visitor.
