Anthony Reese

R. Anthony Reese earned his J.D. with distinction at Stanford Law School in 1995. Before that he got his B.A. in Russian (summa cum laude) at Yale University in 1986. By now, he is Chancellor’s Professor at the University of California, Irvine School of Law. He had various faculty appointments prior to this and started his career at the University of Texas at Austin School of Law as an Assistant Professor from 1999 to 2003. Afterwards he worked at Texas as Thomas W. Gregory Professor of Law (2003-2006) and Arnold, White & Durkee Centennial Professor of Law (2006-2009). He has been a Visiting Professor at Stanford Law School from 2004 to 2005 and joined the New York University School of Law as a Visiting Professor from 2006 until 2007 and in spring 2008 and 2009. Prior to his work at the universities, he clerked for the Honorable Betty Fletcher on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and practiced Intellectual Property Law with Morrison & Foerster. He is a member of the State Bar of California and the Copyright Society of the USA. In 2005 he was elected for one of the year’s five most innovative scholars in law and technology (World Technology Network, Fellow in Law). He earned the “E.M.B.L. Outstanding Teacher Award” in 2003 from the University of St. Gallen HSG, Switzerland. Furthermore he won the University of Texas at Austin Robert Murff Excellence Award for judicial clerkship advising in 2002. His publications include "Public but Private: Copyright's New Unpublished Public Domain" (Texas Law Review, 2007). He has also written about liability of technology developers for copyright infringement by technology users (Stanford Law Review, 2004 (co-author), and Case Western Reserve Law Review, 2005), copyright's first-sale doctrine (Boston College Law Review, 2003), technological protection measures for copyrighted works in digital format (Berkeley Technology Law Journal, 2003), the public display right in copyright law (University of Illinois Law Review, 2001), copyright and Internet music transmissions (University of Miami Law Review, 2001) and state sovereign immunity and Intellectual Property Law (Texas Law Review, 2001) as co-author. He is the co-author of leading casebooks on Copyright Law (with Robert Gorman and Jane Ginsburg), on Intellectual Property Law (with Paul Goldstein), and on Internet Commerce (with Margaret Jane Radin and John Rothchild).
