Axel Balkausky studied journalism, politics and history as well as law, social and economic communication and worked for several years as a freelancer in various sports newsrooms.

At the television station Sat. 1, he rose from editor to the head of the soccer editorial board. In 2000, Axel Balkausky joined Sport1 as head of football and in 2007, he joined NDR as head of the sports programming division.

Since 2009, he has been ARD sports coordinator and is responsible for the sports program. Among other things, this includes programme planning, the acquisition of rights (national & international), international production and communication.
