Benjamin Medlin

Currently leads Cyber Situational Awareness branch, which includes GTRI’s penetration testing team, vulnerability assessments, security operations center (SOC), industry consulting, and software development support in the areas of UI/UX, QA/QC, and PM. Responsible for successful initiation, planning, execution, and closeout of projects in the branch as well as project support within the ETCM division. Project lead on Insider Threat research initiative with a focus on industry implementation and architecture development.

As SENSIAC Director, manages a DoD Information Analysis Center focused on Military Sensing Technology directly supporting DoD and the defense industrial and research community by helping to facilitate the use of scientific and technical information for the design, development, testing, evaluation, operation, and maintenance of DoD sensor systems. To date, the SENSIAC IDIQ contract has executed more than 200 task orders with total combined funding of more than $800M and remains GTRI’s largest IDIQ contract valued at over $2B at time of IDIQ completion. Mr. Medlin served as the primary interface with both Government contracting and sponsor agencies and responsible for all contract initiation and management activities under the SENSIAC program during contract initiation and execution.

Served as subject matter expert for directorate-wide/GTRI-wide contract vehicles and provided strategy & consulting support to both GTRI PI’s and external customers desiring to use those contract vehicles. Assisted across all 3 directorates and for all GTRI laboratories. Lead major cross-lab proposals for the directorate. Developed and maintained 2 to 5 year contracting plans for major GTRI customers. Helped identify and vet new opportunities and advise the Directorate Lead on Bid-No Bid decisions.

Since 2008, Medlin has served as contract vehicle manager for the Military Sensing Information Analysis Center (SENSIAC), located at Georgia Tech. As SENSIAC TAT Manager, Medlin plays a business development and contributing role in all research proposals awarded through the SENSIAC contract vehicle. The SENSIAC contract currently exceeds $100M in annual contract awards.

Medlin started his career at Georgia Tech Research Institute in 2000 as a student assistant. His initial focus was software and database development for electronic performance support systems. Upon becoming a full-time Research Scientist in 2002, Medlin began project work on software tools for RFID systems. Medlin's work in RFID led to unique applications of low power sensor networks and handheld interrogators for mobile devices. Medlin also served as the Principal Investigator for the continued development of the Chemical Companion project. He led the software design and development for the Chemical Companion program, an important mobile decision support tool for first responders.
