Wagner Graduate School of Public Service

Bhaven Sampat is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. At Columbia, he has taught at the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), the Law School, and in The Robert Wood Johnson Health and Society Scholars Program. Before that, he taught at the University of Michigan and at Georgia Tech’s School of Public Policy. Professor Sampat holds a Ph.D. in economics from Columbia. 

Professor Sampat’s research focuses on health policy and innovation policy. His is currently investigating the impact of pharmaceutical patent laws in developing countries and the impact of generic pharmaceutical companies in the U.S. He is also interested in the political economy of the NIH and the returns to publicly­funded medical research. He has published on a variety of topics, including economics, law, business, health policy, medical and life sciences. 

Professor Sampat has been invited to serve as a Distinguished Scholar in Residence affiliated with the Engelberg Center on Innovation Law and Policy at the NYU School of Law. 

 

Professor Sampat received a PhD with distinction in Economics and a Master''s in Economics from Columbia University.
