Harvard Medical School
Bonnie received a BBA in accounting from Siena College in 1981, SM in 1991 from the Harvard School of Public Health in the Department of Health Policy and Management and Sc.D. in 1995 from Harvard School of Public Health concentrating in Health Finance.
Prior to joining the Institute in 2003, Dr. Blanchfield had conducted health services research for 15 years both as an independent consultant and with the Center for Health Affairs at Project Hope analyzing the financial implications of broad policy changes on hospital financial viability, charity care, specific hospital programs, and capital investment. She also spent the prior eight years working as a CPA in a variety of settings ranging from a national accounting firm, KPMG, to a small public accountancy firm in the United Kingdom.
Dr. Blanchfield brings a pragmatic financially based approach to her research, aiming to provide objective and timely evidence to inform both current policy debates and institutional operations. Her expertise in hospital payment systems, financial analysis, business practices, and quality measurement and improvement is complemented by an array of research skills. These include case study techniques, program and policy evaluation, econometric modeling, and the use of financial data and audited financial statements for health services research.
