Summary

Dr Catherine Mulligan is a Research Fellow in the Innovation and Entrepreneurship group with a joint appointment to the Department of Computing where she is Co-Director of the Imperial College Centre for Cryptocurrency Research.  She is a Fellow and an Expert of the World Economic Forum for Blockchain Technologies.  She is standardisation lead for the Open and Agile Smart Cities (OASC) Task Force and Vice Chairman of the ETSI ISG on Context Information Management.

Her research interests lie in the area of new economic structures enabled by the digital economy, in particular the role of cybersecurity and Distributed Ledger Technologies in the creation of trust in digitally-enabled industries, governments and in the creation of citizen-centric smart/sustainable cities.

Catherine has held £5.1 million of grants, including a number of EPSRC grants, including as PI of Scaling the Rural Enterprise.  Catherine is also a Co-Investigator on "Unleashing the Value of Big Data", CI on the Cybersecurity grant: Cloud Run Protection at Runtime (CIPaRT), and CI on CREDIT: Cryptocurrency Effects in Digital Transformations.

Dr Mulligan regularly advises a variety of governments on the role of digital technologies including the UK, EU and Australasia.  She is an advisor to blockchain company Everledger.

Catherine has 15 years international experience in the Mobile Telecommunications and ICT industries.  Working on a variety of cutting edge technologies, Catherine experienced first hand the complexities of successfully taking innovation to market.

Catherine has a PhD (Title: The Communications Industries in the Era of Convergence) and an MPhil in Engineering for Sustainable Development, both from the University of Cambridge and a BSc. (Hons 1) in Business Information Technology from the University of New South Wales, Australia.  Dr Mulligan is also a Visiting Fellow at the Glasgow School of Art Institute for Design Innovation (INDI)

Catherine has published several books, with topics ranging from mobile technologies to the evolution of innovation within the communications industries from 1960 through 2010.
