Harvard Kennedy School

Christopher Winship is the Diker-Tishman Professor of Sociology in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and a member of the senior faculty in the Harvard Kennedy School. He is a research associate at the Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations, the Criminal Justice Program, the Institute for Quantitative Social Science, and a faculty associate of the Science, Technology and Society program. Prior to coming to Harvard in 1992, he was Professor of Sociology, Statistics, and Economics at Northwestern University. He is the author of articles on various statistical and methodological issues including the analysis of qualitative dependent variables, selection bias, and counterfactual causal analysis. His research has also focused on changes in the social and economic status of African Americans during the 20th century, particularly changes in youth unemployment, marital behavior, and prison incarceration. Another line of research has resulted in a series of articles critiquing the findings in The Bell Curve. Since 1994 he has been working with and studying a group of black inner-city ministers known as The Ten Point Coalition and their efforts with the Boston Police Department to deal with youth violence. In 2007 he coauthored Counterfactuals and Causal Inference (Cambridge University Press) with Stephen L. Morgan. He holds a PhD from Harvard.
