Personal profile
Research interests
I am active in the research fields of technology innovation management, entrepreneurship, economics of science and economic geography. Within these fields I pursue two core lines of research. The first analyzes university-based innovation, technology transfer from academia to industry and the effects of academic science on industrial innovation. The second revolves around venture capital and addresses issues such as the geographic distribution of venture capital investments and the factors shaping the investment decisions of venture capitalists.
Currently, I am developing a research project on the NSF’s rotation program. The first working paper of this project won the Best Paper Award at the 2017 DRUID conference held at New York University.
I am a research fellow at the University of Missouri where I received my PhD in applied economics in 2010 which was funded by the Kauffman Foundation. I am Principal Investigator on a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant on “The Road Not Taken: Investigating Orphaned Academic Innovations” ($101,642). In this project we study Type 1 errors.
Willing to supervise PhD
I welcome applications for potential PhDs in the following (broad) areas:
- the origins of university innovation
- the impact of academic research on industrial innovation
- geographic distribution of venture capital and factors affecting the growth of venture capital by knowledge intensive firms
- clusters
- academic entrepreneurs
