Claretta Micheletti Tonetti was educated in Italy, and specialized in literature and philosophy. She wrote her thesis on the narrative of Italo Svevo.

She teaches Italian language and film in the Department of Romance Studies and has also taught Italian cinema and literature in the College of Communication at Boston University. She is the faculty advisor of La Casa Italiana and she has served as head of the Italian language program.

Claretta Micheletti Tonetti has written two books on Italian Cinema: Luchino Visconti and Bernardo Bertolucci – The Cinema of Ambiguity. She has also published on the cinema of Pier Paolo Pasolini.

She was nominated and was one of the finalists for the Metcalf Award for Excellence in Teaching at Boston University.
