Bio
Dan Katzir is a senior advisor to The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation, a national non-profit venture philanthropy fund established by entrepreneur and philanthropist Eli Broad to advance entrepreneurship for the public good in education, science and the arts. From 1999 to 2010, Katzir served as the founding managing director of The Broad Foundation’s education work, which is focused on dramatically improving urban K-12 public education through better governance, management, labor relations and competition. During that time, Katzir oversaw the growth of the foundation’s education work to nearly half a billion dollars in grant commitments.
Katzir also was instrumental in developing and launching the foundation’s four national flagship initiatives:
- The Broad Prize for Urban Education is the nation’s largest education award given annually to urban school systems that have made the greatest overall performance and improvement in student achievement.
- The Broad Superintendents Academy is a year-long executive management program to train working CEOs and other top executives from business, non-profit, military, government and education backgrounds to lead urban school systems.
- The Broad Residency in Urban Education is a two-year management development program that trains recent graduate students, primarily with business and law degrees, who have several years of work experience and places them immediately into managerial positions in the central operations of urban school systems.
- The Broad Institute for School Boards is a national training and support program for urban school district governance teams of school board members and superintendents.
Katzir has more than two decades of leadership in the K-12 education sector. Early in his career, Katzir consulted with the international management consulting firm Bain & Company, where he developed and implemented business strategies for Fortune 500 companies. In 1991, Katzir became chief operating officer for Teach for America. He went on to serve as the first executive director of the UCLA School Management Program, a joint venture of UCLA’s Graduate School of Education and Anderson School of Management that provided executive management training to public school educators. The program provided customized executive management programs for boards of education, senior school district managers, principals and teachers in large school districts. Katzir also served as the founding regional director of Sylvan Learning Systems in Los Angeles, managing 33 reading tutorial centers in the Los Angeles Unified School District, all of which showed significant student achievement gains. More recently, Dan Katzir, along with Donald R. McAdams edited and published a set of case studies called The Redesign of Urban School Systems, Case Studies in District Governance.
Katzir serves on the board of The Broad Center for the Management of School Systems, which runs The Broad Superintendents Academy and The Broad Residency. He also serves on the board of the Nelson A. Rockefeller Center for Public Policy at Dartmouth College, Progressus Therapy, a nationwide special education school-based therapy and early interventions services company, and is a founding board member of Caliber Schools, a blended learning charter management organization based in Northern California. He serves on the advisory board of the Los Angeles Alliance for College-Ready Public Schools. He is an inaugural Fellow in the Aspen Institute-NewSchools Venture Fund Entrepreneurial Leaders for Public Education Fellowship Program.
Katzir has a bachelor’s degree in history from Dartmouth College, where he graduated summa cum laude. He also has an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. He is based in Los Angeles.
