Dr. Darron T. Smith is an Instructor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Memphis. He received his PhD in the Department of Education, Culture & Society at the University of Utah in 2010. Dr. Smith is also a Physician Assistant who has over 15 years in family and behavioral medicine. His practice is primarily within communities of color, including time spent on the Navajo reservation in Southern Utah. This unique blend of skill sets and sociological training has given him a unique understanding of how societal structures and institutions impact individual health and wellbeing. When Dr. Smith is not engaging students, he is a freelance Contributor for the Huffington Post. His work has been featured in The Chronicle of Higher Education, The NY Times and The Chicago Tribune. His research and publications include Religious Studies, Race, Religion & Sports, the Neurosociology of Mental Distress and Transracial Adoption. He is the author of, When Race, Religion & Sports Collide: Blacks Athletes at BYU and Beyond, and co-author of White Parents Black Children: Experiencing Transracial Adoption.
