HEC Paris

David Restrepo Amariles is Associate Professor of Data Law and Artificial Intelligence at HEC Paris. He is co-Director of research on SMART Law (Scientific Mathematical, Algorithmic, Risk and Technology driven law) at the DATA IA Institute and director of the project Smart Contracts and Regulatory Technologies in the Autonomy through Cyberjustice Technologies Programme.

He teaches TechLaw & AI, Current Issues in Digital Transformation, Data Governance and Compliance, and Dispute Resolution. His teaching portfolio includes joint courses with the Stockholm School of Economics (CEMS) and Ecole Polytechnique (Msc Data Science for Business), and standalone courses delivered in bachelor, master and executive education programmes. He is also recurrent Visiting Professor at SciencesPo Paris and currently visiting at the Japan National Institute of Informatics (NII)

His work analyses the transformations of law and regulation in the global and digital society with a special focus on the fields of privacy, financial law, international business transactions and corporate social responsibility. His research combines approaches from legal theory, computer science and informatics, empirical legal studies, and science and technology studies. He has conducted several industrial projects with public partners such as the European Commission and the French Supreme Court, as well as with private partners such as Atos, Baker McKenzie, Dechert LLP, Natixis, among others.

David holds several academic and professional appointments. He is a member of the board of the European Incubator of the Brussels Bar Association and member of the scientific committee of the Pole numérique du Club de juristes. He is also co-chair of the CRN ‘Law and Development’ of the American Law and Society Association, and co-director of the working group on ‘Law and Development’ in the Research Committee of the Sociology of Law (RCSL) of the International Sociological Association. He is a member of the editorial boards of Artificial Intelligence and Law, the European Journal of Risk Regulation and the World Arbitration and Mediation Review.

Before joining HEC Paris he worked as Of Counsel advising governments and corporations on cross-border commercial and investment agreements and arbitration. He also previously held positions as legal advisor (United Nations), Law Clerk (Colombian Judiciary) and Research Associate in International Law ( European Commission's policy and research programme). He is the former director of the working group Europe - Latin America Trade Relations. He held previously academic and teaching visiting appointments at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, Goethe- Universität Frankfurt, and the University of Stockholm.

David conducted his post doctoral research at the University of Oxford, Centre for Socio-Legal Studies. He is also Ph.D in Law from the Université Libre de Bruxelles, LL.M summa cum laude from KUL - Katholieke Universiteit Brussels and the European Academy of Legal Theory, M.A. summa cum laude from the International Institute of Sociology of Law, and valedictorian LL.B in Law from Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana.
