David Faulkner

Dean at Magna Carta College ,Oxford

Biography

I have spent much of my academic life (25 years) in the state sector. I was part of the four men team that set up the Said Business School in Oxford University, I ran the MBA there and was Director of both undergraduate and graduate studies in Oxford, then ran the MBA at Royal Holloway University of London and am now an Emeritus Professor from London University. I also taught at Cambridge, Cranfield, Warwick. The Open and Henley Business Schools.

When I retired from London University, I set up a new college, Magna Carta College Oxford, focusing on the MBA, as I was convinced that the MBA, whatever its limitations, gave a young executive the grounding for a successful career in business, and particularly looked impressive on their CV. The Oxford Handbook of STRATEGY I was also certain from my experience, that given adequate motivation every student could succeed to achieve an MBA and it was not necessary to pay the very large fees that top business Schools charge in essence to buy their brand name. Furthermore, the idea of taking at least one year off work to study a face to face MBA was not necessary, and burdened the student with unnecessary debt. So on the back of MOOCS (Massive Open Online Courses promoted by MIT et al) I opened an online college that was both learn as you earn and economic in fee terms, yet had the content quality of an Oxbridge programme with which I am very familiar. In this way you get the best of both worlds; a quality MBA without a high level of debt and no need to take a break in your career. Good Luck!
