Mr. Sherman is Senior Advisor and Chairman of the Investment Committee at BGO Strategic Capital Partners (formerly Metropolitan Real Estate), a real estate investment management business that he co-founded in 2002 and of which he served as President through 2018. (Metropolitan became part of the Investment Solutions Division of The Carlyle Group in 2013 and was acquired by BentallGreenOak in 2021). In addition, Mr. Sherman is Co-Director of the Paul Milstein Center for Real Estate and an Adjunct Professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Business Administration. Mr. Sherman has more than 35 years of real estate investment, finance and analytical experience.

Previously Mr. Sherman held positions in real estate finance, investment banking, research, consulting, and strategic planning at D. Sherman & Company, Smith Barney, The Harlan Company, First Boston, and Paine Webber. Over the years, Mr. Sherman has published numerous articles in periodicals including American Banker, PREA Quarterly, Shopping Center Business, and National Real Estate Investor.

Mr. Sherman received an A.B. in Mathematical Economics (magna cum laude) from Brown University and an M.B.A. in Finance from Columbia Business School.

Research & Teaching Interests

Professor Sherman''s research has long focused on financial reporting, performance measurement/management, and financial literacy issues facing corporate management and Boards of Directors in global businesses. He also actively studies methods to improve productivity in health care, financial services, and other service organizations and is an acknowledged expert in Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), a method for measuring and managing organization productivity. His current research focuses on audit committee responsibilities beyond compliance and governance issues related to Chinese entrepreneurial businesses that have equities traded on US markets, identifying the paths that increase their likelihood of achieving founder and investor goals.

He is an expert on developing and using financial and non-financial measures to evaluate and manage performance, on fair value accounting and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).

Professor Sherman teaches executive and MBA courses in accounting, control, and global financial statement analysis with a focus international shareholder reporting using IFRS and U.S. GAAP. His industry research and teaching focuses on financial management of high technology, medical technology, financial services, health care, manufacturing and nonprofit organizations.

Industry & Academic Experience

Professor Sherman was an assistant professor of the faculty at the MIT Sloan School of Management prior to joining Northeastern. He has been a visiting professor at INSEAD (France), the Naval Postgraduate School (Monterey, CA), Technion (Israel), Univ. of Auckland, and adjunct professor at the Tufts University School of Medicine. He spent 2004 and 2005 as the Academic Fellow in the Division of Corporate Finance at the Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC), working on current shareholder reporting issues for US and international businesses. Professor Sherman has served as director, manager, and consultant to financial, healthcare, and high technology businesses, including KLA; A.T.Kearney; Bank of America: U.S. Bancorp; Fidelity Brokerage Services (FMR Corp.); U.S. Department of Defense; Department Of Supply and Services (Government of Canada). He has also served as a board member and manager of several new ventures from start-up to IPO and sale to acquiring private and public companies. Professor Sherman is a Certified Public Accountant and practiced with Coopers & Lybrand. He served on an advisory task force of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and served as the controller of the Museum of Fine Arts of Boston.

Board experience: Professor Sherman has served on five public company boards and currently serves on the board and as chair of the audit committee of Kingold Jewelry (NASDAQ: KGJI). He also serves on two not for profit boards and as treasurer: American Academy of Dramatic Arts (NY and LA), and D-Tree International (Cambridge and Tanzania). He currently is advising companies preparing for IPOs in the US market and has, as board member, assisted developing businesses in going public and in listing on NASDAQ.

Services to the Profession

Professor Sherman is a member of the editorial board for Health Care Management Science (INFORMS), and the DEA Journal. He is also an active member of AICPA and Massachusetts Society of CPAs. He is also a member of the American Accounting Association and has previously served as chair of the Health Applications Section of INFORMS.
