Melbourne Business School

Douglas Dow joined Melbourne Business School in 1993 and is currently Professor in Business Strategy. He was also an Executive Director of the School for 9 years (2011 to 2020).

After completing his MBA at the University of Western Ontario, Douglas finished his PhD at Melbourne Business School. In addition to conducting his own research, Douglas is a consulting editor with the Journal of International Business Studies (since 2013), and serves on the Editorial Review Boards of four other academic journals (the Journal of World Business, the Global Strategy journal, the Australian Journal of Management and the Review of International Business & Strategy). Douglas is also the current President of the Australia & New Zealand International Business Academy (ANZIBA) - www.anziba.org.

Before academia, Douglas was a consultant with Boston Consulting Group in Melbourne for five years and, prior to that, was an Aeronautical Engineer with Pratt & Whitney Canada in Montreal for six years.

Douglas is also a founding member of Pelham Associates - www.pelhamassociates.com.au. Pelham Associates is an independent consulting firm through which a number of MBS faculty channel their private consulting activities.

Douglas currently teaches the Business Strategy and Capstone subjects on the MBA program, but has previously taught a range of subjects relating to strategy and international business.

Douglas’ research has been published in the Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management, Journal of International Marketing, Journal of International Management, Global Strategy Journal and Management International Review; and largely explores how cross-national differences like religion, language, culture and education & political systems influence performance and decision making.

In July 2019, Douglas received a Silver Medal from the Academy of International Business for his lifetime publication record in the Journal of International Business Studies. This was part of a series of awards to honour of the Silver Jubilee of the journal. A series of Platinum, Gold and Silver medals were awarded to members "for exceptional, past contributions to the Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS)". One Platinum medal, 16 Gold medals, and 105 Silver medals were awarded.

In August 2019, Douglas was awarded the Hans B. Thorelli Award by the American Marketing Association. This award recognizes the article that has made the most significant and long-term contribution to international marketing theory or practice that was published 5+ years ago. For 2019, the prize was awarded to Douglas' article, “A Note on Psychological Distance and Export Market Selection” which appeared in the March 2000 issue of the Journal of International Marketing (Vol. 8, No. 1).
