Biography

Edward L. Barnes, MD, MPH earned his medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. He then completed a residency and chief residency in Internal Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed a fellowship in Gastroenterology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. During his fellowship, he also obtained a Masters in Public Health from the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health. He returned to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to complete an Advanced Fellowship in Inflammatory Bowel Disease and is currently an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine. He is a member of the UNC Multidisciplinary Center for IBD Research and Treatment.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, disorders of the ileoanal pouch
Research Interests
Dr. Barnes’s interests include the evaluation of clinical outcomes related to differing treatment strategies among patients with inflammatory bowel disease, as well as the effects that these strategies have on cost and resource utilization. He is particularly interested in the use of large databases for the analysis of clinical outcomes and to identify risk factors for complicated disease among patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Dr. Barnes has contributed multiple peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and review articles to the medical literature, and has served as an invited reviewer for Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics, and Inflammatory Bowel Diseases.
