Biography

Dr. Eric Berkson uses state-of-the-art arthroscopic techniques and a personal approach to care, accelerating the recovery of shoulder, elbow and knee injuries and restoring the highest levels of activity. He specializes in the treatment of complex knee ligament and meniscus injuries, revision ACL surgery, cartilage restoration and complex arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the knee and shoulder.
Dr. Berkson received his BA Summa Cum Laude from Brandeis University and received an MA in Computer Science from Brandeis University. He graduated from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine with an MD with Honors in June 2000. He completed an internship in general surgery followed by an orthopaedic residency at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Dr. Berkson completed a fellowship in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine at Mass General.
Dr. Berkson is a member of the Mass General Sports Medicine Center and is an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School. He is a team physician for the Boston Red Sox and Lowell Spinners and is a consultant for the New England Patriots. He is the Head Team Physician for Wheaton College, Eastern Nazarene College, and Archbishop Williams High School. Dr. Berkson was recognized as an Emerging Leader by the American Orthopaedic Association.
Dr. Berkson is the Founding Director of the MGH Sports Performance Center. The Center integrated state of the art technology with the clinical expertise of Mass General Sports Medicine physicians, certified athletic trainers, biomechanical engineers, therapists, cardiologists, nutritionists and certified strength and conditioning coaches.
Dr. Berkson's current research interests include pitching injuries and studies of shoulder and elbow biomechanics.
Research
Dr. Berkson specializes in the treatment of complex knee ligament and meniscus injuries, revision ACL surgery, cartilage restoration and complex arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the knee and shoulder.
Dr. Berkson actively researches clinical outcomes of joint preservation, meniscal repair, multi-ligamentous knee injures as well as shoulder elbow and knee biomechanics with an emphasis on pitching injuries and recovery.
Dr. Berkson is the Founding Director of the MGH Sports Performance Center, a program integrating state of the art technology with the clinical expertise of MGH Sports Medicine physicians, certified athletic trainers, biomechanists, physical therapists, nutritionists and certified strength and conditioning coaches to critically and scientifically analyze athletic activities and to maximize recovery from injury, prevent injuries, and enhance and optimize performance.
Dr. Berkson was identified as an Emerging Leader by the American Orthopaedic Association and was the recipient of the Nicols Foundation Young Researcher Award by the International Society of Arthroscopy.
