Biography

Career overview

I obtained my PhD in 2004 from the University of Birmingham before working on the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (Children of the 90’s) at the University of Bristol as a research associate. I joined Coventry University in 2006 as a lecturer in psychology, and left there in 2016 as Professor, to join the University of Worcester. After promoting to College Director of Research and Knowledge Exchange in 2018 and training as a coach in 2019, I set up a coaching and consultancy business in 2021 and left full time academia. I now maintain my coaching practice alongside my role as Professor of Forensic Psychology at NTU.

Research areas

My research focuses on understanding:

  • the factors that contribute to the perpetration of domestic violence for men and women,
  • the effectiveness of interventions designed to rehabilitate domestic violence perpetrators,
  • the mechanisms that underpin successful desistance from domestic violence offending,
  • how we can develop more effective and innovative practice in working to prevent domestic violence.
