Dr. Curfman is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School who recently joined the Program On Regulation, Therapeutics, And Law (PORTAL). Prior to joining PORTAL, Dr. Curfman had a 28-year career as an editor of the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), most recently as the Journal's executive editor. In his capacity of executive editor of NEJM, he founded the Perspective section of the Journal, a section devoted to new advances in and insights into health care policy. He is a member of the Faculty of Medicine at Harvard Medical School (HMS), where he holds appointments in Medicine and Health Care Policy. His primary teaching appointment is as a tutor in Health Care Policy. He is also a member of the affiliated faculty of the Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology, and Bioethics at Harvard Law School, and he is Senior Advisor and Physician Scholar-in-Residence in the Solomon Center for Health Law and Policy at Yale Law School. He also serves as the Research and Publication Director and Physician Scholar at Northeastern University School of Law's Center for Health Policy and Law.

Dr. Curfman serves as chief medical officer of Alosa Health, a nonprofit organization with a focus on academic detailing. He is a member of AcademyHealth, the American Society of Law, Medicine & Ethics, and serves on the Comparative Effectiveness Public Advisory Council of the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review (ICER).

Much of Dr. Curfman’s career centers on the publication of novel research and analysis in health law and policy. He currently serves as Health Care Policy and Law Editor of JAMA Internal Medicine. In this capacity he is responsible for the selection of manuscripts for publication in the areas of health law and health policy. In his position at the Solomon Center for Health Law and Policy at Yale Law School, he works with faculty members and students on their scholarly publications in health law policy. He previously served as editor in chief of Harvard Health Publishing at Harvard Medical School, where he and his colleagues created a HarvardX online course entitled “The Opioid Crisis in America.” He publishes frequently in Health Affairs and JAMA Internal Medicine, among other publications.

Dr. Curfman is board certified in internal medicine and cardiology. He earned his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. He trained in internal medicine and cardiology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital. He directed the Coronary Care Unit at Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Cardiovascular Health Center, a heart disease prevention program at Massachusetts General Hospital. In addition to writing scores of articles for The New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA Internal Medicine, and Health Affairs, Dr. Curfman has given testimony to the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. He has also contributed amicus briefs in Supreme Court health law cases. His scholarly interests include the cost of prescription drugs, drug patent law, biosimilars, consolidation within the health care industry, and the opioid crisis.
