Biography
Harvard Medical School
Dr. Hassan A. Khalil is a thoracic surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. He is a strong advocate for his patients and is dedicated to the idea that his patients are integral to their own care. He strives to provide state-of-the-art surgical care by forming a multidisciplinary care team of experts for each individual patient.
Dr. Khalil is a native of Houston. He received a Bachelor of Science in biomedical engineering from the University of Houston. He completed his medical training at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. For surgical training, he moved to Los Angeles to join the University of California, Los Angeles’s elite general surgery program. He completed both his cardiothoracic surgery and advanced thoracic and foregut training at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery.
Dr. Khalil’s clinical practice is focused on the surgical and multidisciplinary care of patients with thoracic and foregut diseases. He has an interest in both benign thoracic disease and thoracic oncology. He specializes in minimally invasive and robotic surgery.
His research is centered on multifocal lung adenocarcinoma, epithelial-mesenchymal transition in lung cancer, and mesothelioma. He is utilizing his biomedical engineering background to come up with ways to decrease the incidence and duration of air leaks after lung surgery and prevent anastomotic leak after esophageal surgery. He has presented at numerous local, national, and international summits and has authored many scientific manuscripts.
As member of the faculty at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Khalil emphasizes education of medical students and residents.
