Biography

Bristol Business School

I am Professor of Human Resource Management in the Faculty of Business and Law where I chair the Professoriate. I joined UWE in 2015 from Queen Mary University of London. I have extensive experience of journal editorial board membership, sitting on the boards of Gender Work and Organization, Equality and Diversity International and Work, Employment and Society (2009-15). I am a member of the British Universities Industrial Relations Association (BUIRA) where I was the membership secretary between 2004-7. I am a member of the British and European Sociological Association and Chair of the Research Network ‘Gender Relations, Labour Markets and the Welfare State (RN14). Much of my work has focused on the State as employer and legislator. Most recently it has centred more directly on discrimination and inequality in the workplace, particularly in relation to the development and effectiveness of legal interventions. In relation to this, I have published a book in 2014 (with Dr. Margaret Page) Gender Equality in Public Services; Chasing the Dream, Routledge Studies in Management, Organizations and Society. I have undertaken critical research on the concepts of multiple discrimination and intersectionality, focussing recently on the impact of economic crisis, austerity and 'Brexit'.
