Van Steenbergen studied at Leiden University, where he obtained a BA degree in Philosophy of Psychology, and a BSc and MPhil degree in Cognitive Neuroscience (cum laude / with honours) in 2007. He obtained his PhD (cum laude / with honours) from the same university in 2012, on a thesis entitled "The drive to control: How affect and motivation regulate cognitive control ".
