James Boon Yong Koh

I am currently a Data Science Instructor and AI Practicum Manager as SMU School of Computing and Information Systems.

My prior roles were an AI Scientist at IMDA Digital Services Lab (where we develop end-to-end solutions to boost the competitiveness of Singapore's industry), and a machine learning engineer at BioMind (where we apply deep learning on medical images)

I graduated in 2014 with a B.Eng in Aerospace Engineering, earning a place in the dean’s list in my senior year. Thereafter, I completed my PhD in Nanyang Technological University. My thesis involves modelling the kinematic behaviour of cells subjected to external fields. I studied the feasibility of sorting to improve the proportion of morphologically normal cells for assisted reproduction. My research led to the publication of five papers in top quartile journals, and two conference presentations.

I have a passion in using data science to find solutions. I seek to apply my niche in critical thinking, with knowledge of statistics and machine learning algorithms, to gain insights from the vast amount of data so that beneficial decisions can be made.

With over nine years of programming experience, writing code to solve complex problems has become second-nature. I also enjoy teaching, and had been voted Best Teaching Assistant by NTU for tutorials which I had conducted for undergraduate students.
