Biography

Jim Freeman''s background is in statistics and operational research.  Presently, his research interests include game theory, risk management and statistics applications.  Reflecting the latter he has been involved in developing a large number of decision support packages for organisations as diverse as Cyanamid, Makro Self-service Wholesalers, and Greater Manchester Police. Related consultancy activity has been undertaken on behalf of Manchester City Council, Barcrest Ltd, Pilkington Group Research, Shell Chemicals, Norweb, GTE Sylvania, Currys, Cooperative Retail Services and Britannia Hotels.

In 1992/3 he was visiting professor at the Department of Finance and Management at the University of Alberta.

In 1998 he received the ANBAR Citation of Excellence for his Journal of Operational Research Society paper, published the same year.

From 2003 and 2006 he was Director of MBS''s Masters programme in Operations Management.

From 2008 - 2012 he was Editor of OR Insight on behalf of the Operational Research Society.

In 2011, he resumed the role of Programme Director of the retitled Masters programme in Operations, Project and Supply Chain Management.

In January 2012, he was awarded a £130,847 Knowledge Transfer Partnership with the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management,  to develop a web-based decision support tool and education programme to improve risk management practitioners'' access to reliable management information.

In 2012 he received the Woodard award from the Tewkesbury Historical Society (http://www.ths.freeuk.com/aboutus/honours/woodard_award.htm) for the best article published in the 2011 THS Bulletin.

In November 2012 he - with colleagues Suntichai Kotcharin and Steve Eldridge - received the Outstanding Achievement Award for the Best Application Paper at the Decision Sciences Institute 43rd Annual Meeting in San Francisco.

He is regularly in demand as a stream organiser at national and world conferences on subjects ranging from simulation, decision analysis, quality, gambling and statistics / distributions.
