Biography
Professor Janelle Yorke (PhD, MRes, PGCE, RGN) is Lead of the Christie Patient Centred Research (CPCR) group at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and Deputy-lead of the Supportive Palliative Care (SuPaC) research group at University of Manchester. Professor Yorke joined the University of Manchester as part of Project Diamond in May 2012 and was appointed the foundational Joint Chair in Cancer Nursing, University of Manchester and The Christie in May 2015. Since her appointment as Joint Chair, she has developed a strategy for clinical research at The Christie and leads a team of researchers in the newly formed Trust level research group, CPCR.
Prior to her appointment at University of Manchester, Professor Yorke work held academic positons at University of Salford, Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Trust and Imperial College London. Her prestigious clinical career included Nurse Consultant for heart and lung transplantation at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney.
A global leader in respiratory research Professor Yorke has an established program of research in supporting individuals living with long term conditions. A primary objective of her work has been to improve the symptomatology and quality of life of people living with a long term illness through development of PROMS, better understanding the illness experience and palliative care needs of patients and their families, and the development and testing of multifaceted self-management interventions.
Professor Yorke holds numerous leadership roles at an international level including: incoming Chair of the European Respiratory Society Nurse Group; Chair British Thoracic Society Nurse Advisory Group; Chair American Thoracic Society Nursing Scientific Committee Chair; and is a member of the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) Medical Technology Appraisal Committee. Professor Yorke has published widely in world leading journals such as Thorax, European Respiratory Journal and BMJ Open, and she reviews for and sit on the Editorial Board of many journals, including Thorax.
