Amsterdam Institute of Finance

Jim Wahlen is Professor of Accounting, Chair of the Accounting Department, and the James R. Hodge Chair of Excellence at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. His teaching and research interests focus on financial accounting and the capital markets.

Professor Wahlen has co-authored a textbook on financial statement analysis and valuation, titled Financial Reporting and Statement Analysis: A Strategic Perspective, 9th edition, with Professors Stephen Baginski and Mark Bradshaw. He has also co-authored a text titled Intermediate Accounting: Reporting and Analysis, 3rd edition, with Jeff Jones and Don Pagach.

Jim Wahlen has taught courses on financial accounting and financial statements analysis in Undergraduate, MBA, Master of Accounting, PhD, and Executive Education programs at Indiana University and has received numerous teaching awards from Indiana for his teaching in the MBA program and the PhD program. Prior to joining Indiana University, he was an award-winning professor on the accounting faculty at the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina. Jim has also served as a visiting faculty member at the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago; INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France; and Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul.

Professor Wahlen’s research examines the relation between financial statement information and share prices and returns. He has examined the degree to which the stock market is efficient with respect to accounting information, testing the extent to which an investor can successfully predict future stock returns with earnings and other financial statement information. In addition, he has investigated accounting questions involving financial instruments (loans, investment securities) and financial institutions (banks and insurers). His research has been published in leading accounting and finance journals such as:

Jim Wahlen received his PhD from the University of Michigan in 1991, and has had public accounting experience in both Milwaukee and Seattle.
