Biography

Professor of International Management at the University of Sussex Business School, and Visiting Professor at the Graduate School of Business (GSB) at the University of Cape Town, specialising in institutions, international management strategy and emerging markets. Previously, he served as a Professor and Director of International Relations at the GSB, was a Professor at the Wits Business School (served in various capacities including as their Director of International Programmes and as Academic Director), and was Executive Dean in the Faculty of Management at the University of Johannesburg.

He was a Visiting Scholar at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1999, 2006 and 2011, at the Università degli Studi di Macerata, Italy in 2015, a Senior Global Fellow at the School of Public Policy and Institute for Advanced Study at the Central European University in Budapest, Hungary and the Global Public Policy Institute in Berlin, Germany in 2016, a Visiting Professor at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in Santiago 2011-2013, and a Research Affiliate at Columbia University in 2006. Besides the Ph.D., John has completed various other programmes including the Cambridge Advanced Programme on Development Economics at Cambridge University, the Wharton Global Faculty Development Programme, and Strategic Management at the Harvard Business School. He is a member of various professional bodies and was President of the Economic Society of South Africa 2014-2016. He is on the Editorial Board of several journals and a referee for over a dozen more.

He has published in excess of 150 publications including over 100 articles in leading journals. He is the co-author and/or editor of several books published by Macmillan, Pearson and Oxford University Press, over 20 book chapters, and the co-author of an award-winning case study on sustainable development.

John works as a consultant and has undertaken work for the United Nations, African Development Bank, UK Department for International Development, Development Bank of Southern Africa, the Industrial Development Corporation, the Department of Trade and Industry, the United States Agency for International Development, the Johannesburg Development Agency, and the Centre for Development and Enterprise, amongst others. He is active in management training and executive education and consulting at several leading multinational corporations, public entities, and NGOs. He has lectured at various universities and programmes including the INSEAD My Globe Programme, the Grow Your Business programme and the Management Development Programme with Duke University, and programmes with Emory University; HEC Paris; Rotterdam School of Management; University of North Carolina; Thunderbird School of Global Management; United Nations System Staff College; University of Cologne, Fundação Dom Cabral; IESE, Wharton Global CEO Program, Brown University and IE, TIAS, Frankfurt School of Finance and Management.
