Jonathan Li, MD, MMSc, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Dr. Li graduated magna cum laude from Brown University in 1999 with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Computer Science. He received his Medical Degree in 2004 from the University of California, San Francisco. In 2001, Dr. Li received the Vanderryn Memorial Fund Award for summer internship in Mexico City and the Rainer Fund International Health Travel Grant from the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Li received the Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship and studied the viral host features of HIV long-term survivors in China and evaluated the virucidal efficacy of soap and water on HIV in genital secretions from 2002-2003.

Dr. Li completed his residency in Internal Medicine in 2007 at the University of California, San Francisco. During his residency program, Dr. Li was a recipient of the Floyd C. Rector Research Symposium Award, the Teaching Excellence Award for Cherished Housestaff and the Jeffrey Weingarten Award for Housestaff.

Dr. Li continued his medical training as a Fellow in Infectious Disease at Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and a Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School from July 2007- June 2010. During his fellowship, Dr. Li was awarded both the Edward H. Kass Award for Clinical Excellence and the Maxwell Finland Award for Research Excellence by the Massachusetts Infectious Disease Society.

In 2010, Dr. Li joined the Partners AIDS Research Center and has published in high-impact journals such as JAMA, AIDS, the Journal of Infectious Diseases, Clinical Infectious Diseases, and Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy. He has served as a member of the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) HIV Reservoirs and Viral Eradication Transformative Science group, as well as Protocol Virologist and Co-Chair for various ACTG studies, including the A5308 trial of antiretroviral treatment for HIV Controllers and the A5345/A5347s study of biomarker predictors of HIV rebound timing during an intensively monitored antiretroviral pause. In the spring of 2014, Dr. Li was awarded the John Carey Young Investigator Award by the ACTG.

Dr. Li is the Director of the Harvard Virology Specialty Laboratory of the ACTG and the Director of the Harvard University Center for AIDS Research Clinical Core. He is also the Deputy Editor for the Infectious Disease Society of America journal Open Forum Infectious Diseases and a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for the Journal of Infectious Diseases. Dr. Li has also served as an ad hoc reviewer for many journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, Clinical Infectious Diseases, and PLoS Pathogens.

During the course of his career, Dr. Li has trained many medical students, residents, and fellows in clinical settings, as well as students and post-doctoral fellows in the laboratory. Dr. Li has taught courses at Harvard Medical School to 1st year medical and MD/PhD students. Dr. Li regularly gives presentations at local, national and international conferences on his studies. He is the recipient of the Young Investigator Award at the Conference on Retrovirus and Opportunistic Infections (CROI).

Dr. Li is dedicated to a career of clinical and translation HIV research and continues his research in the Section of Retroviral Therapeutics at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He continues to split his time between the research lab, patient care, and teaching aspiring researchers in the HIV/AIDS field.
