Professor Jose Maria Valderas is the Head of the Department of Family Medicine and Director for the Centre of Health Services Research at NUHS. He has worked as a General Practitioner in the UK, Spain and in a variety of environments, including developing countries for very brief periods (Tindouf and The Gambia). As an Academic General Practitioner, with a commitment to research that is relevant for decision making in clinical practice and health policy, he has held substantive appointments at the Universities of Exeter, Oxford, Manchester and Johns Hopkins and visiting appointments at the London School of Economics and the Universities of Paris and Sydney. He has received funding from OECD, and public funding bodies and charities in the UK, Spain and Norway, participated in ca. 70 research projects and authored over 200 publications. He is Field Chief Editor for Frontiers in Health Services and has served on multiple editorial boards and committees. He is devoted to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching that meets the needs of the future health and research workforce. He has provided expert advice to the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation & Development (OECD). He has been elected by his peers as chairman of the Working Party on Quality & Safety, World Organisation of Family Doctors (WONCA) and previously as President of the International Society for Quality of Life Research (2017-2019).
