Background
Joe Irvine joined the Fisher College of Business faculty on a full time basis in 2012. He teaches Business Law at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Prior to becoming a faculty member he was Development and Tax Counsel for the University, where his duties included tax planning and compliance primarily in the areas of unrelated business income and charitable giving as well as resolving conflicts with the IRS and state and local tax agencies. He was an attorney with a multistate law firm before joining the University. He started his career with one of the Big Four accounting firms.
He was listed among the nation’s top professors in The Princeton Review publication “The Best 300 Professors.” He also received the Max M. Fisher Faculty Eminence Award recognizing outstanding undergraduate faculty.
He previously served as Chair of the Tax Council of the National Association of College and University Business Officers and is a past cochair of the Taxation Section of the National Association of College and University Attorneys. He is a member of the Ohio State Bar Association and the AICPA and the former Tax Lead of the Steering Committee for the AICPA NotForProfit Industry Conference. He is a past recipient of the NACUBO Tax Award.
He is admitted to practice law in Ohio and the Federal Court for the Southern District of Ohio. He is also a certified public accountant and has done over one hundred presentations for a number of organizations, including the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants, the New York Society of Certified Public Accountants, the Mississippi Society of Certified Public Accountants, the National Association of College and University Business Officers, the National Association of College and University Attorneys, and the Tax Institute for Colleges and Universities.

BUSFIN 3500 Legal Environment of Business
An introduction to American legal institutions, sources of law, and an analysis of basic concepts of public and private law related to business decisions. Prereq: Soph standing. Not open to students with credit for 510, or to students enrolled in UUSS, UExp or PreBSBAPR.
BUSFIN 4510 Legal Business Issues
Fundamentals of contracts and other legal aspects of business. Prereq or concur: 3500 and BusMHR 2291 (BusAdm 499.01). Not open to students with credit for 510.
BUSFIN 7280 Legal Business Issues
Contract law, tort law, and employment law relevant for financial managers. Prereq or concur: MBA 6221, 6222 (810), BusFin 6220, or 6211 and 6212. Not open to students with credit for 833.
