Biography

Joseph Kunnuji holds a doctorate in Ethnomusicology, and he is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the South African College of Music, University of Cape Town. He combines teaching, research and performance in his exploration of African musics. Inspired by West African Ogu music, Kunnuji’s compositions and performances blend popularised jazz and indigenous African elements to create musical syntheses. His research interests include the reimagining of African musical traditions, the marginality of ethnic minorities and its implications for their musics.
