Assistant Professor at University of Cambridge

Biography

-

Jostein Hauge is a political economist. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. His research interests are in the areas of international political economy, economic development and industrialisation, technological change and digitalisation, the role of the state in economic change, and comparative-historical analysis. He is currently working on a book, The Fate of the Factory: Manufacturing-led Growth in the 21st Century, under contract with Oxford University Press. The book investigates the ways in which the globalisation of production, digitalisation, and the threat of ecological collapse are calling into question manufacturing-led economic development and growth, and the implications this has for industrial policy.

Jostein’s research spans many academic disciplines, including Political Economy, Development Studies, International Relations, Development Economics, and Political Science. His recent research has been published in African Affairs, Development Policy Review, Geoforum, Third World Quarterly, and World Economy. In addition to his academic research, Jostein writes for media outlets such as The Guardian, The Conversation, International Politics and Society, and Africa is a Country. He also advises on policy issues for governments and international organisations, and has co-authored reports and essays for the UN Economic Commission for Africa, the UN Industrial Development Organisation, the World Economic Forum, and the UK Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy.

Prior to his post at Cambridge, Jostein was a Fellow at the LSE. Before that, he was a postdoctoral Research Associate at the Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation Policy at the University of Cambridge. He holds a PhD from the Department of Politics and International Studies at the University of Cambridge, where he was supervised by Ha-Joon Chang. His thesis was entitled “African industrial policy in an era of expanding global value chains: the case of Ethiopia’s textile and leather industries”. He obtained his Master’s degree in Political Economy of Development from the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies, and his Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
