Joyce Klein-Rosenthal

Associate research scientist with the Center for Sustainable Urban Development at the Earth Institute of Columbia University

Biography

Joyce Klein-Rosenthal is an associate research scientist with the Center for Sustainable Urban Development at the Earth Institute of Columbia University. Her research evaluates the social equity and public health dimensions of urban planning and design for adapting to environmental change and reducing risk in urban settlements, and examines the shared strategies, goals, and histories of the urban planning and public health disciplines in the creation and maintenance of urban space. Her research uses spatial analysis and community-based approaches to assess environmental health disparities in cities, interactions between urban design and microclimates, and land-use and housing policies for risk reduction and coastal resilience. Her current research is also evaluating urban policies to reduce the hazards of legacy lead pollution in American cities.

This year, Klein-Rosenthal is a Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow (2017-2018); her postdoctoral research is assessing the impacts of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program on local housing near property acquisitions. Klein-Rosenthal received her PhD in environmental planning, master's in urban planning, and master's of public health in environmental health sciences from Columbia University. She was visiting faculty of urban planning at Columbia’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, following five years as faculty at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. Before graduate study, she worked twenty years in environmental planning, research and management.
