Biography

Professor of Psychology and Special Needs, qualified as both a clinical and educational psychologist. Major research interests are in patterns of development and the ways in which cognitive factors impact on children's learning, interaction and attainments. A central theme in this research has been the application of evidence based research and evaluating interventions to support children’s learning in educational settings. She was the previous editor of the British Journal of Educational Psychology, associate editor for Journal of Speech, Language and Hearing Research and is now an editor of Learning and Instruction.
She was co-director of the Better Communication Research Programme, the largest UK study on language and communication needs. This project has created a number of tools to use in school settings and a ‘What works ‘ portal for language and communication. She was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the RCSLTs, is an Academician of the Social Sciences, a member of two previous Psychology Research Assessment Exercise panels and has been a visiting Professor at the University of Umea and the University of Padova.
