DePaul University
Karen Monkman is a Professor Emerita, at DePaul University in Chicago, where she specializes in comparative and international education and also US educational issues related to equity. She is currently serving as a visiting scholar at the Institute for International Studies in Education (IISE), University of Pittsburgh, and is also President-Elect of the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES). Along with other IISE members, she is planning the CIES 2021 annual meeting in April 2021, and will then become President of CIES. She has been a visiting professor at Stellenbosch University (South Africa) and Tianhua College (China), and has done research and/or conducted workshops in Cambodia, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Oman, and Mexico.
Dr. Monkman’s research focuses on gender, migration, transnationalism and globalization, as they relate to educational processes. She is currently working on two co-edited books (Education in Global and Transnational Spaces in a Rapidly Changing World, and Education in Precarious Times), and was co-editor on the 2000 and 2014 editions of Globalization and Education: Integration and Contestation across Cultures (with Nelly P. Stromquist; Rowman & Littlefield Publishers). Recent journal articles include “Educating Girls: Complexities of Informing Meaningful Social Change” (in Studies in Social Justice, 2018), and “Girls’ Education: The Power of Policy Discourse” (with Lisa Hoffman, in Theory and Research in Education, 2013). Additional recent work includes “Gender Equity in Global Education Policy” (forthcoming, in Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Education, Cris Mayo, editor), and “Using Discourse and Ethnographic Methods in Gender-focused Comparative and International Education Research” (with Emily Anderson, Emily, Ayesha Khurshid & Payal Shah, in Annual Review of Comparative and International Education, 2019). She has mentored 36 doctoral and master’s students through their dissertation and thesis processes.
