Dr Katjana Gattermann is Assistant Professor of Political Communication and Journalism at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR), Department of Communication Science, University of Amsterdam. She was previously postdoctoral researcher for the Amsterdam Centre for Contemporary European Studies (ACCESS EUROPE); and before that postdoc at the Jean Monnet Chair of Prof Wolfgang Wessels, Political Science Department, University of Cologne, where she was member of the former internationally collaborative research project ‘Observatory of Parliaments after Lisbon’ (OPAL). She obtained her PhD in European Studies from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2012.

Her research interests comprise political communication, political behaviour, public opinion and legislative behaviour in the European Union. Her work feeds into debates about the legitimacy and accountability of politics within and across the EU. She has recently been awarded an individual research grant by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) for the project entitled ‘Facing Europe: The personalization of European Union politics in news coverage and its consequences for democracy’ (€250,000; 2016-2020). Her publications have appeared in journals such as the European Journal of Political Research, European Union Politics and West European Politics.
