Biography

National University of Singapore

An Assistant Professor since 2010 at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineeering, I conduct research in the area of structural health monitoring, in particular damage detection in engineering structures using optical fibre sensors. My interest also include development of low-cost, ease-to-use sensor technologies and methods for application in the industry. I have commercialised an optical fibre sensor educational kit which is presently used in a number of schools in Singapore and holds a patent on an extrinsic plastic optical fibre sensor and filed another patent under PTC for damage or deformation detection based on chemiluminescence. I have been invited to speak at various conferences and venues such as the 20th International Plastic Optical Fibre Conference 2011 in Bilboa (Spain), JEC Innovative Composites Summit 2011 (Singapore), Institute of Engineers Singapore, Science at the Cafe @ Singapore Science Centre 2007, Housing Development Board SHM 2014. He has published over 40 articles and a book chapter with h-index of 12 (Scopus).

Dr Kuang has taught and tutored courses including Engineering Mathematics, Statics and Mechanics, Geographical Information System and Engineering Professionalism and Structural Analysis. He is currently teaching CE2407 Engineering and Uncertainty Analysis.

In addition to teaching Civil Engineering courses, he is heavily involved in the Design-Centric Programme (DCP) under EDIC, supervising many design projects including Cambodia Social Innovation Projects and other Civil Engineering Final Year Projects. One of the students he supervised won the High Achievement Award (highest award) under Individual Category for the FoE 29th Innovation and Research Award AY2014/2015 (Faculty of Engineering-level award) and NUS Outstanding Undergraduate Research (OUR) Prize AY2014/2015 (University-level award).

He is also Chairman of the NUS International Design Summer Programme which started in 2012.
