Hans Christian Kongsted is a Professor at the Department of Innovation and Organizational Economics of the Copenhagen Business School. His research and teaching interests focus on the areas of innovation, labor and applied econometrics. He explores firms’ R&D and innovation activities and how they relate to the skills and experience of employees, drawing on his methodological background within the fields of econometrics and labor. He has ample experience in collecting and statistically analyzing data at a large scale and his recent research is based on uniquely detailed and comprehensive data on Danish firms and their employees, constructed from administrative registry information and patent records. Kongsted’s research has been published in highly-ranked journals such as the Journal of Econometrics, the Journal of Economic and Business Statistics, and the Journal of Banking and Finance.

Kongsted teaches statistics and econometrics both at undergraduate and graduate levels. He aims at providing students with the statistical and econometric skills necessary for them to engage in quantitative data analysis to understand the behaviors of firms and individuals.

In ongoing work, Kongsted studies the relationship between the labor mobility and firm innovation. A paper recently published in the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization tracks the movements of different types of employees across firms and estimates the net contribution of R&D worker mobility to aggregate innovation. Another paper focuses on the impact of the mobility of university scientists on industrial innovation. A third paper considers the effects of recruitments on a firm’s propensity to conduct R&D that explores technological domains other than its existing knowledge pool. Jointly, Kongsted’s recent projects uncover mechanisms in the market for R&D labor which are important in assessing the impact of public policy in areas such as labor market regulations, research policy and university-industry relations.
