Dr Leonel Lim is Associate Professor at the Policy, Curriculum and Leadership Academic Group. He was the recipient of the NIE-NTU Overseas Graduate Scholarship, under which he completed his doctoral studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research focuses on curriculum studies, the politics of education, and the sociology of curriculum. In 2014 Leonel received the American Educational Research Association's Outstanding Dissertation Award in the field of curriculum studies. He has published in international peer-reviewed journals such as Journal of Education Policy, Curriculum Inquiry, London Review of Education, Journal of Curriculum Studies, Critical Studies in Education, Cambridge Journal of Education, and Discourse. His monograph Knowledge, control and critical thinking in Singapore (Routledge, 2016) was awarded the coveted 2018 Critics' Choice Book Award by the American Educational Studies Association. His recent edited books (with Michael W. Apple) include The Strong State and Curriculum Reform (Routledge, 2016) and Critical Studies of Education in Asia (Routledge, 2019). He received the NIE Excellence in Teaching Commendation Award 2018.

A philosophy graduate of the National University of Singapore, Leonel was twice awarded the university's Special Book Prize in Philosophy. At the University of Wisconsin-Madison he was awarded the International Student Achievement Award. He completed both his Postgraduate Diploma in Education and Master of Arts at Singapore's National Institute of Education, and was a former primary school teacher.

He currently serves as Associate Editor for Pedagogies: An International Journal and is also founding editor of the new Routledge book series Politics of Education in Asia.
