Marc R. Reinganum joined NYU Stern as a Visiting Professor of Finance in September 2018. He earned his AB with High Honors from Oberlin College, and a MBA and PhD from the University of Chicago.

Professor Reinganum is an accomplished senior asset management and academic thought leader, innovator and practitioner. In the asset management industry, Professor Reinganum served as Senior Managing Director and Global Head of Active Equities at State Street Global Advisors (SSGA), the world’s third largest asset manager. He managed teams across seven cities on four continents and was responsible for the implementation of global and regional equity strategies. He also directly managed SSGA’s US Dynamic Small Cap Fund (SVSCX) and during his five years at the helm, it achieved the #1 rank in Morningstar’s category, outperforming all other fundamental and quantitative small cap core managers. In his role as Chief Quantitative Strategist, Professor Reinganum spearheaded efforts to innovate and create relevant, thoughtful and outcome-oriented client-centric solutions. He engaged and communicated with asset owners and their consultants on strategic issues with a particular emphasis on dynamic factor-based investing and smart beta.

Prior to joining SSGA, Professor Reinganum was co-head of the Main Street Team and Senior Portfolio Manager and Director of Quantitative Research at OppenheimerFunds, where his group managed $30+ billion in small-cap, large-cap and multi-cap strategies and helped create a 5-star Morningstar fund.

Professor Reinganum is known as a founding father of stock market anomalies, and particularly the so-called “Small Firm Effect.” For this work, the Financial Analysts Federation honored him with the Graham and Dodd Scroll. He was listed in the Top 1% of most cited authors in the finance literature. Three of Professor Reinganum’s papers received the All-Star Paper designation by the Journal of Financial Economics. His work was seminal in the area of “smart beta” and factor investing.

In academia, Professor Reinganum was the Mary Jo Vaughn Rauscher Chair in Financial Investments at Southern Methodist University (SMU). At SMU, he also served as the Director of the Finance Institute, Chairman of the Finance Department, President of the Faculty at the Cox School of Business and member of the Board of Trustee Investment committee. At the University of Iowa, he was the Phillips Professor of Finance and Director of the Financial Markets Institute. He began his academic career at the University of Southern California and has taught at the University of Chicago as well. Most recently, he mentored MS in finance students at MIT in the study of smart beta design.

Professor Reinganum is currently on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Portfolio Management. He has also served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Financial Research, Journal of Futures Markets, Journal of Portfolio Management, Management Science, Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting, Quarterly Journal of Business and Economics, and The Financial Review and as a reviewer for numerous academic journals including the American Economic Review, Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics and the Journal of Political Economy.

Professor Reinganum is recognized as a leader by peers in the industry, currently serving as Executive Vice President of the Institute for Quantitative Research in Finance (Q-Group), and a member of the Economic Club of New York and the Chicago Quantitative Alliance. He has been featured on the cover of Money magazine and interviewed by The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Bloomberg, Fortune, CNBC and NPR for insights into the financial markets.

Professor Reinganum is currently on the Advisory Board of Driehaus Capital Holdings in Chicago and serves as a Senior Advisor to AJO in Philadelphia. He served as President and CEO of Investment Strategy, Inc. and Reinganum Consulting, firms that provided investment research services to large institutional investors and specialized in providing market forecasts for the relative performance of small versus large cap stocks. Since 2016, Professor Reinganum has consulted for institutional asset managers to help them enhance their investment processes, hone their messaging, develop product and rationalize their investment organization and technology. In addition, he recently co-authored the CFA Level III Curriculum on “Active Equity Portfolio Construction.”

Professor Reinganum is an active community volunteer and has taken an especially keen interest in academic institutions. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Emerson College and on the Founders Council of ArtsEmerson. In addition, Professor Reinganum serves on the Finance Committee of the Lumin Education Foundation in Dallas, TX, and the Advisory Board of the Jacobs Levy Equity Management Center at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He has served on the Investment Committees of several University Endowments as well.
