Dr. Marcin Barczyński is Associate Professor of Surgery at the Jagiellonian University, Medical College, Department of Endocrine Surgery. Dr. Barczyński was raised in Kraków and educated at the Jagiellonian University, Medical College in general and endocrine surgery, as well as in surgical oncology at the Maria Skłodowska-Curie Memorial Institute of Oncology in Kraków, Poland. Dr. Barczyński had postgraduate training in endocrine surgery at the University of Halle, Germany, and University of Essen, Germany, and training in minimally invasive surgery at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, USA.
Dr. Barczyński served as President of the National Delegate Council of the European Society of Endocrine Surgeons (ESES) in 2006 – 2010, a member of the Research and Education Committee of the ESES in 2011 – 2012, and he has been elected the Treasurer of the ESES in 2014 – 2018, and the member of the Executive Board of the European Thyroid Association – Cancer Research Network (ETA-CRN) in 2013 – 2017. He serves also as the Secretary of the UEMS Division of Endocrine Surgery of the European Board of Surgery. Dr. Barczyński is an active member of 12 scientific societies, including the European Surgical Association (ESA), the European Thyroid Association (ETA), the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO), the International Association of Endocrine Surgeons (IAES) and the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons (AAES).
Dr. Barczyński’s principle research interests have been in surgical disorders of the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands. He has a particular interest in endocrine surgical oncology (thyroid and parathyroid cancer), and novel technologies in endocrine surgery (intraoperative nerve monitoring, intraoperative iPTH assay), as well as minimally invasive endocrine surgery (retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy, minimally invasive parathyroidectomy).
Dr. Barczyński is the author of more than 130 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, and he serves on three editorial boards, including Journal of Thyroid Disorders and Therapy, and Minimally Invasive Surgery. His publication records include: Lancet, Lancet Oncology, Annals of Surgery, British Journal of Surgery, World Journal of Surgery, Langenbeck’s Archives of Surgery, Surgical Endoscopy, and many more. Dr. Barczyński’s citation index is 655 and h-index is equal to 16 (according to Web of Science Core Collection).He is best known for his prospective randomized studies of the outcome of nerve monitoring in thyroid surgery, one focused on prevalence of the recurrent laryngeal nerve injury, published in British Journal of Surgery 2009, and another one focused on the injury to the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve, published in World Journal of Surgery 2012. Dr. Barczyński has been the President of the Polish Working-group of Intraoperative Neural Monitoring in Thyroid Surgery, and the President of the Organizing Committee of the upcoming First World Congress of Neural Monitoring in Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery.
