Mark Allan is Executive Director of the Institute for Health System Innovation & Policy, working under the leadership of Dr. Jonathan Woodson. He is also a member of the faculty at Questrom School of Business and the Department of Family Medicine in the School of Medicine.

Mark returned to Boston University after two years living in India, as founding Executive Director of the Max Institute for Healthcare Management at the Indian School of Business, ranked number two for business schools in India and 33rd globally by the Financial Times. The Max Institute combined degree and certificate educational programs, applied research, thought leadership, and development oriented projects focusing on primary care and health systems design, entrepreneurship, and public private partnership.

Mark has a long history of executive positions in the healthcare industry, as well as senior academic and consulting roles. For seven years he served as Faculty Director of the Health Sector Management Program at Questrom, an independently-accredited program of the School. He expanded Program breadth, dramatically increased student enrollment, and developed strong dual degree programs with the schools of Medicine and Public Health. He played a leadership role in multiple national trade and accrediting organizations, furthering the standing of business-school based health management education. For five years he concurrently held the faculty position of Director of Health Systems Development at the School of Medicine in the Department of Family Medicine.

Mark’s previous work included multiple positions as Executive Director and CEO of healthcare and related organizations. This included building and leading BMC HealthNet Plan, a subsidiary of Boston Medical Center, with a budget of $500 million, as well as running a community health center and several other service delivery entities. Over the past 25 years he has acted as consultant to health plans, academic medical centers, and private and government organizations. His work included providing assistance in strategic planning, financial analysis, system development, and government relations. He was originally trained as a psychotherapist, and though he is no longer in active practice he maintains a strong interest in medical/behavioral health integration.

Mark has an MBA in Health Sector Management from Boston University, an MSW from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a BA from Columbia University.
