Mark Smith

Mark Smith is Professor and Director at Stellenbosch Business School (South Africa). He is former Faculty Dean and Professor Human Resource Management at Grenoble Ecole de Management (France). At Grenoble, he was Faculty Dean (2016-20), Director of the Doctoral School (2013-16), Head of Department (2012-13), and research team leader "Work Life Careers" (2012-15). Prior to working in France he worked at Manchester Business School (UK). His research interests focus on careers and labour market policy & outcomes for women and men including working conditions, working-time, diversity management, and work-life integration.

He has carried out research work for a number of European and National institutions and is a member of the expert group for the European Commission’s on Gender Equality. He has recently finished work on a large-scale European project on the impact of the crisis on youth www.style-research.eu/ and the role of Pay Transparency in closing gender pay gaps.

He has authored or co-authored over fifty books, book chapters and journal articles. He publishes regularly in the media about his research and the management of business schools. His most recent books include – “Youth Employment” (with Jacqueline O'Reilly, Clémentine Moyart, & Tiziana Nazio published by Policy Press in 2018), "Business Ethics - A critical approach: integrating ethics across the business world" (with Patrick O’Sullivan & Mark Esposito, published by Routledge in 2012), and “Gender and the European Labour Market” (with Francesca Bettio & Janneke Plantenga, also published by Routledge in 2013). He has also been a member of the editorial board of Work, Employment & Society.

As Dean, he led over 170 academic staff and was responsible for the management, development and deployment of faculty across five teaching departments and eight transversal research teams for over 50 programmes and 6000 students. As Director of the Doctoral School he managed one of the largest doctoral schools for management sciences in Europe, (~400 full and part-time students worldwide). He has led faculty and School through various accreditations (EQUIS, AACSB, AMBA, etc.).
