Marnin Romm

Dr. Marnin Romm is a specialist interdisciplinary Pain Management clinician and assistant and associate Professor currently based in Boston USA. He has a PhD (University of Miami) which focused on pain management, a Masters in Science in both Pain Science (Kings College London) and Physiotherapy (Wits University), an Honors degree in Clinical Psychology (Wits) and an undergraduate degree in Psychology and English (Wits).

Currently, in addition to being a faculty member for various academic institutions, Dr. Romm is affiliated with Harvard Medical School as a pain science research fellow in their Neuromodulation lab. Dr. Romm’s PhD at the University of Miami focused on specific novel areas within the world of pain management and pain neuroscience.

Through his multidisciplinary academic and clinical training background, which spans over a 20 year period, Dr. Romm`s clinical practice, lecturing, and research within the field of chronic and complex pain encompasses an integrative approach and he has published articles in numerous peer reviewed pain medicine journals.

Through the course of Dr. Romm’s career to date, he has worked in numerous in-patient and outpatient pain clinics in the U.K. and South Africa, where he also developed, coordinated and run numerous interdisciplinary pain management programs. In South Africa, Dr. Romm managed his own busy interdisciplinary pain management practice.

Along with his current academic work, he continues to consult with chronic and complex pain patients on a part-time basis. Dr. Romm is often requested, on a consultancy level, to assist other healthcare providers and specialists in the diagnosis and management of their patients with complex chronic pain conditions.

On a faculty and academic work-basis, Dr. Romm was also the course/curriculum developer and coordinator for the first Masters degree in South Africa on the topics of Pain Management and Pain Neuroscience at Wits University Medical School. Dr. Romm, within the USA, continues to develop, coordinate and teach pain science courses and curriculum for various well known educational institutions. Dr. Romm has also been a guest lecturer for various universities globally, and also a key-note speaker for numerous national and international conferences and congresses, lecturing on various topics around pain management, pain neuroscience, and musculoskeletal rehabilitation.

Through adopting a biopsychosocial model of integrative medical practice, teaching, and research, Dr. Romm has specialized in trying to understand and treat all patients with chronic and complex pain through this framework. Finding new neuroscientific mechanisms in order to further understand the complex multifaceted nature of chronic and complex pain, has allowed Dr. Romm to fulfill his passion in teaching university students and other qualified healthcare professionals to translate research findings into evidence-based clinical pain management practice. Dr. Romm’s ultimate goal, through his career has been and continues to be, to steer the ship that allows patients with chronic and complex pain to deservedly have the best possible outcomes following treatment, and overall improve their quality of life when living with pain.
