Martin Jesus Nieto

Background

Dr Jesus Nieto Martin graduated from the Higher Technical School of Engineering of the Unversity of Seville with an MEng Honours degree in Mechanical Engineering. On his senior year, he then pursued a double degree at Cranfield University in Supply of Low Carbon Energy Technologies. 

He obtained his PhD in Evolutionary Optimisation of Power Systems in 2017 from Cranfield University. His research was sponsored by the UK Distribution Network Operator, Western Power Distribution (WPD), for whom Dr Nieto Martin has contributed to evaluating and proposing future investment frameworks as well as leading several projects across the value chain, such as electrical transportation, city planning, as well as consumer behaviour. 

Before being appointed Senior Research Fellow at Cranfield University, he was seconded at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in the US (2015), as well as, the Energy Markets Group at London Business School (2016). 

Current activities

Dr Nieto Martin is working on the EPSRC/Energy Systems Catapult Whole Energy Systems Study: “System Transition to Digital Energy”.  Alongside  the partners and collaborators, we are investigating the technologies that can aid the digital transition of the energy sector, unlocking domain integration of whole-system modelling. 

In parallel, and while supervising MSc students, he is collaborating with Western Power Distribution and Omnetric group on providing local balancing services for DSOs and dynamic Blockchain based retail tariffs for distributed microgrids.
